Vol. 545 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Consultants.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

94 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the total number of hospital consultant posts; the numbers filled on a temporary basis; the numbers which are vacant; if, in relation to the accident and emergency consultant and anaesthetist consultant posts announced under his initiative, he will indicate the number of posts which were created in each area; the number filled on a temporary basis; the number on a permanent basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30889/01]

The number and regulation of consultant posts is a matter for Comhairle na nOspidéal in the first instance. The number of permanent consultant posts has grown rapidly in recent years – 175 since January 2000. There are now 1,615 permanent consultant posts in the public sector funded by my Department and approved by Comhairle. As many as 1,385 posts are currently filled in a permanent capacity and 30 posts have become vacant recently due to retirements-resignations.

There are 200 Comhairle approved, vacant, permanent consultant posts. The recruitment process being undertaken by the relevant employing authorities is at an advanced stage in respect of 130 of these posts. Approximately 50 new consultants are scheduled to commence duty in these posts in the new year.

Employing authorities have not yet advanced the recruitment process in respect of the remaining 70 posts, some of which have been created in recent months.

At the request of the employing authorities, which are the health boards and voluntary hospitals, 180 temporary posts have been created by Comhairle pending the filling of the approved permanent posts.

The report on consultant appointment pro cedures, June 2000, has identified ways of streamlining and speeding up the recruitment process. These recommendations are being considered by my Department and the employing authorities.
In relation to the 29 accident and emergency consultant posts and 19 consultant anaesthetist posts funded by my Department as part of the winter initiative, 12 temporary A&E posts have been filled and 11 temporary consultant anaesthetist posts have been filled. A review by Comh airle of A&E staffing and services is due for completion by the end of this year. This review will lead to the creation of a significant number of permanent consultant posts in this sector. The following table outlines the areas in which the winter initiative posts have been created.
At the request of employing authorities, eight of the temporary anaesthetist posts are being funded by my Department and approved by Comhairle on a permanent basis. Similar applications from other agencies are envisaged.
