Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - Euro Changeover.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

12 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he is satisfied that the required additional security measures are in place to address relevant matters relating to the amounts of additional cash which will be in circulation to accommodate the euro transition, especially in retail industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31749/01]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that detailed security and logistical plans for safeguarding the issue of euro currency and the return of Irish currency have been agreed by all key stakeholders. The Garda Síochána, through its community relations department, has been in direct contact with representative groups concerning the crime prevention aspects of this matter. Furthermore, all gardaí have been advised to interact locally with persons affected by the changeover to ensure that they are provided with maximum protection during the changeover period.
