Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

877 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of original or valuable chimney pieces, architraves, doorcases, doors, or other fixtures and fittings of value which have been stolen or removed without permission from historic or listed properties within the care or ownership of the State; the buildings from which such items were removed or stolen over the past ten years; the security which was in place to protect these items; the measures which have been taken to recover these items; the number of these items which have been recovered; if prosecutions have taken place or are pending in these cases; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1912/02]

Departmental records of thefts over the past ten years of artefacts in the categories referred to by the Deputy are as set out in the table. In each case, the Garda Síochana was informed, the items were registered in the art loss register and details were submitted to the Antiques Trade Gazette.

I consider that it would not be appropriate to put details of the security measures at each property into the public domain, but I am satisfied that adequate security measures are in place to prevent future such incidences. No prosecutions have taken place or are outstanding.
