Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

1122 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress in 2001 regarding the provision of the extra facilities required at Tiermohan National School, Donadea, Naas, County Kildare; the action which has been taken since his Department was originally alerted to the necessary requirements; the procedures to be gone through at this stage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1258/02]

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

1380 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the degree to which facilities at Tiermohan National School, County Kildare are adequate to meet requirements; his plans for upgrading; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2678/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1122 and 1380 together.

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is 153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The commencement of architectural planning for new school building projects will be contingent on the level of funding available for primary buildings in 2003 and the application from Tiermohan National School will be reviewed at that stage.
