Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

1180 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a second technical graphics teacher available in Coláiste Spioraid Naomh, Bishopstown, County Cork to accommodate those students who are unable to opt for this subject due to a shortage of places. [1534/02]

My Department, having considered an application from the principal of the school referred to by the Deputy, approved an additional teacher allocation to the school to cater for technical graphics in the current school year.

The teacher allocation for second level schools for a particular school year consists of the allocation warranted by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September, on the basis of the current pupil-teacher ratio, together with approved ex-quota and concessionary posts.

It is open to individual school authorities to apply to my Department for an increase in the teacher allocation to cater for curricular needs within the school. Each such application is considered in the context of available resources and having regard to existing provision.

Should an application for an additional teacher allocation in respect of the next school year be submitted by the principal, it will receive full consideration.
