Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ceist:

1191 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if learning supports or resource teaching can be provided for children with scotopic sensitivity syndrome; his plans to put such supports or resources in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1625/02]

(Dr. Woods): Learning support teaching is provided for pupils who function at or below the 10th percentile on standardised norm-referenced tests of literacy or numeracy, including children suffering from the condition mentioned by the Deputy. My Department's learning support guidelines provide practical guidance to teachers, parents and other interested persons on the provision of effective learning support to pupils with low achievement/learning difficulties.
In cases of more serious need, resource teaching support can be provided to pupils who have been assessed with learning difficulties arising from a disability. The criteria applied for accessing such support are set out in my Department's circular 8/99 copies of which have been forwarded to all national schools.
