Ceist:1197 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider approving an additional position of employment at a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [1660/02]

My Department provides funding towards the cost of caretaking services in the school referred to by the Deputy under a scheme introduced in 1979 for the employment of caretakers in primary schools. Under this scheme, the school employs a full-time caretaker while my Department reimburses the school authorities in respect of the salary costs of the person in question. While the post is fully funded by my Department, the caretaker involved is an employee of the school authorities.
This scheme does not provide for the employment by schools of more than one caretaker per school. Accordingly, it will not be possible to approve an additional caretaking post in this school.
