Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

166 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if his Department operates term time; the number of persons who applied for this in 2000, 2001 and 2002; the number of persons who were accepted and availed themselves of the scheme; if persons were refused; if so, the reason therefor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3895/02]

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

167 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of persons who applied for term time at the offices in Bray, County Wicklow for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002; the number of persons refused; the reasons for refusal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3900/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 166 and 167 together.

The statistical information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following tabular statement.

All applications for term time in the Department are processed under the centrally agreed arrangements which provide that the operation of the scheme is subject to the operating requirements of the Department not being adversely affected. It follows that, where there are a number of applications from a particular work area, it may be necessary to limit the numbers of staff who can be facilitated in any year. The Department has endeavoured to facilitate as many applicants for term time as is compatible with maintaining an adequate service to the public. Any applications refused have been for business reasons in the particular work area.
