Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - Firearms Policy.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

189 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the firearms policy review carried out by An Garda Síochána has been completed; if so, when it will be published; if he will provide a copy to Deputy Timmins; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5039/02]

I have received a report from the commissioner following his review of the current firearms licensing policy. I am considering his recommendations on the matter and any proposals which may emerge will be announced in the usual way in due course.

Ceist:

190 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number and type of firearms which were initially held under a temporary custodial order in 1972 and remain in the possession of the gardaí; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5040/02]

Records compiled in 1972 indicate that 559 rifles, 849 pistols and 700 revolvers were surrendered to the gardaí under the Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order,1972. They are stored in Garda custody and in Army barracks in Dublin and throughout the country.

I am informed by the Garda commissioner that approximately 1,000 such weapons are in Garda custody. Details of those stored in Army barracks are currently being compiled.
