Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

431 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the sanctioning of the tender process for the replacement building at the Dominican College, Taylor's Hill Secondary School, Galway; if this will be allowed to go to tender immediately in order that work could start on the school on 1 June to allow three months work before the school re-opens in September; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5498/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.31 million. This is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Since this Government came into office the level of investment in the post-primary buildings area has been greatly increased. There has also been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction. This has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The stage 4/5 submission, detailed design and bill of quantities, for the Dominican College, Taylor's Hill has not yet been received in my Department. The question of proceeding to tender can be considered after the stage 4/5 submission has been received and examined by my Department.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

433 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a school (details supplied) in County Wexford, with a current enrolment of 100 pupils, is operating from two permanent classrooms built in 1943, together with a portacabin and a converted play shelter; the status of the school's application for a four classroom extension with ancillary facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A building project at the school in question is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
