Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

442 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education and Science if or when funding will be made available for a school (details supplied) in County Monaghan for urgent restructuring; if he has satisfied himself that the present facilities lead towards proper education; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5606/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A proposed building project for the school to which the Deputy refers will proceed to architectural planning and to the preparation of tender documents, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

443 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give permission to proceed to stage III for the building of an extension to a school (details supplied) in County Mayo. [5608/02]

The school referred to by the Deputy is being refurbished as part of the Government's programme as is currently in architectural planning. It will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
