Vol. 549 No. 1

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic, I received notices from Deputies McManus and Sargent. I first call on Deputy McManus to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention: the very serious crisis in accident and emergency services in hospitals, as a result of which over 100 patients were waiting on trolleys yesterday afternoon; the particular problems experienced by Beaumont Hospital, which had to turn ambulances away for two hours; and the need for the Minister for Health and Children to act to provide the necessary resources to end this crisis.

I call on Deputy Sargent to state the matter.

I first wish, on behalf of the Green Party, to be associated with the expressions of sympathy following the tragic accident and death of Wayne O'Donnell. I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the urgent situation regarding the health services and to ask the Ministers for Health and Children and Finance to introduce the necessary measures and resources to ensure there are no further shortages of staff and equipment at hospitals, such as Beaumont, which are often unable to cope with admissions resulting in horrendous delays and conditions for patients and staff.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it be in order in accordance with Standing Order 31. In regard to the second topic, I received notice from Deputy Gay Mitchell and now call on him to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the fol lowing matter of urgent importance: the death of a woman asylum seeker while giving birth at a Dublin hospital and the need for a planned, compassionate, co-ordinated and accountable approach by the Government and State agencies to the needs of immigrants and the issues surrounding immigrant affairs.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31.
