Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Marina Development.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

67 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a proposal for a feasibility study for the development of a marina at Kilcummin, Carrowmore-Lacken, Ballina, County Mayo; and his views on the application in this regard. [6149/02]

In January this year, my Department was notified by the Carrowmore-Lacken Development Association Limited of its proposal to undertake a feasibility study to assess the technical and financial feasibility of constructing a marina and improving docking facilities at Kilcummin harbour, Carrowmore-Lacken, County Mayo.

The Deputy may be aware that I recently formally launched the marine tourism sub-measure which will be implemented by my Department as part of the two regional operational programmes of the National Development Plan, 2000-2006. Under this grant scheme, €25.4 million has been allocated to marine tourism and targeted partic ularly at improving marine access infrastructure such as marinas, berths and slipways. Funding will also be available under the scheme for feasibility studies in respect of marine access infrastructure projects.
My Department has already announced the first call for applications and formal application forms and guidelines have been made available by my Department to all parties, including those in Carrowmore-Lacken, who have expressed an interest in the scheme. Once formal applications are received from the promoters of proposed projects, they will be assessed in accordance with the procedures laid down under the scheme.
