Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

101 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the funding provisions for the play and recreational (national children's strategy) initiative; and if capital or current funding will be available for outdoor play areas from his Department or other Government Departments. [7324/02]

As the Deputy will be aware, the national children's strategy "Our Children – Their Lives" was launched in November 2000. The strategy is a major Government initiative to improve the quality of children's lives. It is a ten year plan, which includes a range of proposed actions such as providing access to play and recreation facilities for children. Approximately 2,500 children participated in a consultation process for the national children's strategy. The main issue raised by children was the lack of play and recreation facilities.

The Cabinet committee on children has decided that the development of a play and recreation policy is to be a priority for the National Children's Office this year. Funding for the construction of two playgrounds has been provided on a pilot basis and the experience gained in the development of these will inform the development of the national play and recreation policy.

A working group comprising representatives from government departments and key agencies has been established to develop this policy. Their work includes examination of green space provision, housing estate design, safe walkways and cycleways and the issue of insurance. There will also be a strong focus in the new policy on play facilities. The policy, including the financial implications, will be brought to Government for approval.
