Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pigmeat Sector.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

156 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the role of his Department and the legal framework involved, governing the importation of breeding stock for the pig industry. [7561/02]

The importation of livestock from other EU member states is governed by a number of EU directives which establish, inter alia, the trade conditions and the veterinary certification requirements for such trade. In the case of the importation of pigs the relevant Council Directive is 64/432/EC, as amended, on trade in cattle and pigs. My Department as the competent authority under the directive applies the veterinary control measures necessary to implement the provisions of the directive.
