Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

633 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding an extension to a school (details supplied) in County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7981/02]

My Department expects to be in a position during this year to give further detailed consideration to an application from the school referred to by the Deputy for improved accommodation as part of the expanded building programme.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

634 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the proposed improvement works to Burnfort national school, Mallow, County Cork. [7982/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

Architectural planning for the provision of an extension to Burnfort national school is nearing completion. The project will continue to the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

Sean Fleming

Ceist:

635 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science the applications for funding received from schools in County Laois for maintenance and minor refurbishment of classrooms, toilets, windows, doors and other related works under the devolved grant scheme; and the reason no school in County Laois was included in the recent announcement of such grants. [8049/02]

Sean Fleming

Ceist:

638 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science the schools in County Laois which have received funding for new schools, extensions to schools, refurbishment and improvement works since 1997; and the amount involved in each case. [8052/02]

Sean Fleming

Ceist:

640 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science the schools in County Laois where applications for improvements, extensions, amalgamations or new buildings have been received; and the progress in relation to each of these schools. [8054/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 635, 638 and 640 together.

I will arrange to have a list of major school building projects in architectural planning and those funded in recent years to be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible. Primary schools are not required to notify my Department in advance of the nature of the works undertaken under the grant scheme for minor works to national school properties nor do they make formal application for grant-aid. All recognised primary schools receive an annual capital grant of €3,809 per school plus €12.70 per pupil under the devolved grant scheme. It is the responsibility of the school authorities to identify and prioritise the works in question and to arrange to have them carried out within the terms of the scheme.
