Vol. 551 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

86 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his views on the concerns of the Cheekpoint and Faithlegg Residents Association, County Waterford regarding the proposed new Cheekpoint sewerage scheme (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10503/02]

I am aware that licensed commercial aquaculture exists in the Waterford Estuary and that human health and such licensed operations would be put at risk in the event of contamination of the shellfish. For that reason my Department is insisting on ultra violet, UV, or equivalent treatment of the sewage before discharge. Tertiary treatment will not kill viruses in the sewage which pose such a risk but UV or its equivalent will. As the location of the pumping station and the storm overflow are not on the foreshore and do not fall within my remit, my concerns will be taken into account by the local authority and the Department of the Environment and Local Government in reaching decisions on the sewerage schemes.
