Vol. 551 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

35 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the percentage increase in DART capacity in recent times; the developments over the next number of months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10354/02]

Iarnród Éireann has informed me that in the past two years, a total of 38 new DART cars have been delivered; 26 are now in service, resulting in an almost 40% increase in capacity, with 12 more to join them in the coming weeks. When the remaining 12 DART cars are in service, which will allow the operation of all six car DART trains at peak hour, the capacity of the DART system will have increased by almost 50% since 2000. The next phase of the DART upgrade project will be works to facilitate the operation of eight car DART trains at peak hour. This phase will involve an upgrade in the overhead power capacity, platform extensions and the purchase of a further 36 DART cars. Approximately €14 million in Exchequer funding is being provided in respect of these works in 2002.
