Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

723 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will establish jointly with the Minister for the Environment and Local Government a pilot project in Kilrush Community School to develop electronic voting with a view to establishing an educational package on voting procedure in a modern democracy. [11443/02]

The various legislative codes dealing with the registration of electors and the conduct of elections and referendums are matters for my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. I understand the constituencies of Dublin North, Dublin West and Meath have already been chosen as the pilot constituencies for the introduction of electronic voting. As regards establishing an educational package on voting procedure in a modern democracy, this area is already covered by the Junior Certificate Syllabus on Civic, Social and Political Education. CSPE is part of the required curriculum in all recognised post-primary schools operating a junior cycle programme.
