Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Costs.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

66 Mr. O'Shea asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her proposals to meet the concerns of ISME regarding business insurance (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11211/02]

The pricing and underwriting of insurance is a matter for individual insurance companies. EU law prevents me and our Department from intervening in relation to the matter of premium levels or in respect of what risks insurance companies are prepared to underwrite.

I am very much aware of the increases generally in insurance premiums for most types of cover and of the difficulties this is creating for some businesses. I recently met the Irish Insurance Federation and with representatives of the main insurers to discuss these difficulties.

Following a request from the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association, I have agreed to meet it to discuss, in particular, the difficulties its members are having in obtaining insurance.
