Vol. 552 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

176 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will fulfil the commitment which he made on a number of occasions recently in Dáil Éireann to publish the full list of 850 applications from schools which have applied for major capital works; the stage each application is at; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12738/02]

The allocation of funds for major capital works in the current year, which were provided through the Estimates, the budget, public private partnerships and other sources, is nearing completion. When this work is completed by the building unit of my Department it will be possible to provide the up to date information which the Deputy has requested. I will arrange to have a list of the major school building projects involved forwarded to the Deputy, including as far as possible the stage of each application.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

177 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the extensive plans for additional housing in two separate areas (details supplied) in Dublin 24 with the consequent further explosion of pupil numbers; his plans to cater for the needs of so many additional pupils in these areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12739/02]

Officials of my Department's planning section meet on a regular basis with the planning department of South Dublin County Council with a view to identifying the need for additional edu cational provision and reserving sites for schools where required.

The areas referred to by the Deputy are being monitored by my Department and any need to increase school places in those areas will be addressed by extending existing school capacity, or through new school provision, as appropriate.
