Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

590 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 466 of 12 June 2001, the additional measures which have been taken to respond to the continuing problem of street prostitution in the area of Dublin 7 (details supplied). [13108/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on the 7 May 2002 a community meeting was held in the above mentioned locality which was attended by public representatives, Dublin City Council, local residents and the gardaí. As a result of this meeting, it was decided to increase the number of both foot and mobile patrols carried out in the area on a daily basis. I understand that this action has yielded an increase in both the number of prostitutes and clients arrested for these activities. I am further informed that Operation Encounter has been extended to cover the area, which will continue to receive ongoing Garda attention.
