Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

John Bruton

Ceist:

611 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to introduce new laws to speed up civil litigation. [13438/02]

The Government has made a commitment in its agreed programme to introduce new laws to speed up civil litigation. I intend to fully implement the programme and expect to make a detailed statement on the issue in the near future. One aspect of this is the introduction of a personal injuries assessment board which is the responsibility of my colleague, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employ ment. I believe that this initiative will reduce the cost of delivering compensation for personal injury sustained in accidents at work and motor accidents and that it should have a significant impact on the number of cases that go to court. I am also having court procedures in general reviewed so as to see how civil litigation can be speeded up.
