Vol. 553 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

77 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the call made by ASTI for the provision of adequate learning support for dyslexic students and the appointment of at least one full-time learning support teacher to every school; his proposals in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14744/02]

All schools in the free education scheme have an entitlement to an ex quota allocation in respect of remedial education since the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year. In general the allocation to a school is determined by the number of students attending it. Schools with an enrolment of 600 or more pupils are entitled to a full post. Those with an enrolment of less than 600 are entitled to the equivalent of half of a post for remedial education. Schools with enrolments of less than 600 which were specifically allocated a full post in respect of remedial education by my Department prior to the 1999-2000 school year retain their entitlement to an allocation of a full post.

In the current school year the ex quota allocation to second level schools in respect of remedial education is of the order of 560 whole-time teacher equivalents. The question of allocating additional posts to second level schools in respect of remedial education will be considered in the context of available resources and having regard to the recommendations of the Expert Group on the Allocation of Teachers to Second Level Schools.
