Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Asbestos Removal.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

422 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay by the Office of Public Works in removing asbestos from a school (details supplied) in County Roscommon; when this work will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16446/02]

A survey of the school in question was carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works in June 2002 and arrangements for the removal of asbestos materials identified were put in hand immediately. It is intended that the necessary works will be carried out in tandem with other refurbishment works in the school, commencing during the mid-term break later this month, thus minimising interference with the school's activities.

In the circumstances there has been no undue delay in dealing with the matter. The materials in question are generally intact and pose no health risk provided they are not damaged or disturbed prior to removal. The school authorities have been fully appraised of the position.
