I have directed the maritime safety directorate of my Department to urgently review the current safety measures for small watercraft with a view to bringing forward practical and effective measures to improve safety at sea. The review is focusing on the requirement to wear lifejackets, licensing requirements, enforcement, intensified spot checks and improved safety awareness. I intend to publish a consultation paper on safety matters regarding small watercraft shortly.
My primary concern is to put in place a regime of regulation, enforcement and public awareness, which will end the dreadful cycle of avoidable tragedies in our waters.
