30 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if it is intended to establish a commission to review local authority electoral areas in view of population changes identified in the recent census; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17339/02]
The need to review local electoral areas will be considered when the census report setting out the population of the State, classified by area, is published by the Central Statistics Office next year. If a review is decided upon, the Local Government Act, 2001, requires that the Local Government Commission be requested to prepare a report on the matter. It is intended that the relevant provisions of the Act of 2001 will be commenced in the coming months.
