Vol. 555 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legislative Review.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

33 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a statement on the report of the Hederman Committee on the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1998. [18511/02]

The report of the committee reviewing the Offences against the State Acts, 1939 to 1998, was published on 2 August of this year. The committee had already produced an interim report on the Special Criminal Court in August 2001. As I stated when publishing the report, it is extensive, deals with complex issues of law and policy and involves important considerations concerning the balance to be struck between national and international security on the one hand and civil liberties and individual rights on the other. I am considering the report and will bring proposals to the Government in due course.
