Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Stay Safe Programme.

John Dennehy

Ceist:

351 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools in which the stay safe child protection programme is available; if he has satisfied himself with the operation of the scheme and its availability; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19859/02]

The implementation of the stay safe programme involves in-service training for the school staff, parent education and personal safety skills education for primary school children. Since its introduction in 1991, almost all schools – 98.6% – have participated in in-service training and 87% have facilitated parent education regarding child protection issues.

Approximately 75% of schools are teaching the stay safe programme in the classroom. Results of a survey carried out in 2000 show that of these about three quarters have incorporated stay safe into their curriculum and are teaching the programme on an ongoing basis. It is anticipated that the full introduction of the children first guidelines will result in an increase in the number of schools teaching stay safe.
