Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Private Partnerships.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

376 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools currently being built under public private partnership; the cost of each of those schools; and the names of those schools being built in partnership with a company (details supplied). [20098/02]

Five schools are currently being built using the public private partnership procurement model.

The contract for the construction of a bundle of five post-primary schools under the first education public private partnership project was signed in November 2001 with Jarvis Projects Limited. The five schools are Maria Immaculata community college, Dunmanway, County Cork, Ballincollig community school, Ballincollig, County Cork, St. Attracta's community school, Tubbercurry, County Sligo, Largy College, Clones, County Monaghan and St. Caimin's community school, Shannon, County Clare. The Tubbercurry school was handed over to the Department last Friday, almost seven weeks ahead of schedule. Shannon, Ballincollig and Dunmanway schools are also ahead of schedule and will be available later this month.

This pilot project was developed on a design, build, finance and operate basis. While the maintenance and operation of the buildings is a matter for Jarvis for the duration of the service contract, in this case 25 years, the management of the schools and their day to day running will remain with the school management authorities. The State will retain legal ownership of all properties.

The capital cost of each school, including fixtures, furnishing and equipment, professional fees, etc., is: St. Attracta's €16.47 million, St. Caimin's €14.10 million, Ballincollig €18.68 million, Maria Immaculata €16.10 million and Largy College €14.17 million.

Under the terms of the contract the company is required not only to construct the schools, but also to provide all fixed and loose furniture and fittings, including, inter alia, computers, physical education equipment, musical instruments and woodwork and metal work equipment.
