Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

407 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Galway, a teacher and special assistant have been authorised by the special unit of his Department; when the special teacher and assistant are due to take up employment; the terms of engagement in respect of these employees, that is, temporary, whole time or on specific contract; if such an educational programme will be provided for this person on a permanent basis and is required in accordance with Supreme Court rulings in these matters; and if he will make a statement in regard to the appointment concerned. [20431/02]

I wish to advise the Deputy that my Department has agreed to allocate funding for the provision of teaching and special needs assistant support for the young adult in question.

The responsibility for recruiting and putting in place conditions of contract for these staff will be with the service provider. My Department is liaising with the provider in this regard.

The allocation is subject to review and will be considered in the context of discussions between my Department and the Department of Health and Children in relation to the future development of education and healthcare services for persons with disabilities who are over 18 years of age.
