Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

409 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint an architectural team for the new school for Scoil Choca Naofa, Kilcock, County Kildare; the timeframe for the building of the new school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20485/02]

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme for 2002 under way, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

Given the extensive nature of the programme, my Department has no plans at present to start architectural planning for further major primary school building projects. My Department will be reviewing the position in the light of the allocation to be made for the primary building programme in the 2003 Estimates.

In the meantime, the board of management at Scoil Choca Naofa should ensure that essential health and safety issues at the school are attended to. It should therefore continue to use the devolved grant for minor works and if the cost of any works of an emergency nature exceeds the amount available under the devolved grant, it may apply to my Department's building unit for grant aid.

Ceist:

410 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will authorise the detailed design stage of the required extension to Maynooth post-primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20486/02]

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

428 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which extra facilities have been identified as a requirement at Maynooth post-primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; the progress in relation to addressing these needs in the past 12 months, on a monthly basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20608/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 410 and 428 together.

Stage three developed sketch scheme has been examined within my Department's post-primary building unit. It has been necessary to seek further clarification on a number of items from the chief executive officer of County Kildare VEC and his design team regarding this submission.

A response has been received recently and will be examined by the Department's technical staff. When this examination is completed, subject to all being satisfactory, the question of allowing the project to proceed to stage four detailed design will be considered in the light of the available capital for 2003 and current commitments.
