Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

415 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which extra facilities have been identified as a requirement at St. Patrick's post-primary school, Naas, County Kildare; the progress in relation to addressing these needs in the past 12 months, on a monthly basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20595/02]

The proposal from the chief executive officer of County Kildare Vocational Education Committee to dispose of the existing St. Patrick's post-primary school, Naas, County Kildare, and to provide new accommodation on a site has been considered.

Having received legal advice in connection with the outcome of the process which raised a number of concerns, my Department's post-primary building unit has informed the chief executive officer that it is not in a position to approve the transaction. In the circumstances, the building unit has recently advised the chief executive officer to put forward an alternative proposal and a response is awaited.

Ceist:

416 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which extra facilities have been identified as a requirement at St. Mary's College, Naas, County Kildare; the progress in relation to addressing these needs in the past 12 months, on a monthly basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20596/02]

An extension project has recently been completed at St. Mary's College, Naas, County Kildare which will cater for an enrolment of 800 pupils. The school authorities have submitted an application for further additional accommodation. My Department's planning section has provided a long-term enrolment of 900 pupils with which the trustees of the school agree.

My Department has an extensive school's building programme under way. The programme includes a substantial programme of works scheduled to go on site in the course of the year as well as a large number of projects at various stages of planning.

Decisions relating to additional projects proceeding to planning are taken having regard to the annual allocation for capital project, existing commitments and priority afforded to each individual project. When the financial allocation has been made for the second level schools' building programme for 2003, this school's application will be reviewed and official of my Department will be in direct contact with the school's management authority.
