Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Suicide Prevention Programmes.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

499 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the expenditure on suicide prevention programmes in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. [19871/02]

In 2000, funding of €1.714 million was provided to health boards by my Department for suicide prevention programmes. An additional €1.054 million was provided in 2001 and a further €1.110 million has been allocated this year.

These figures include funding of €507,921 or £400,000 which has been allocated over the past three years to the National Suicide Research Foundation toward the establishment of a parasuicide register and a national parasuicide study.

The figures above do not include funding provided by other Government Departments such as the Departments of Education and Science, Environment and Local Government and Justice, Equality and Law Reform who were identified in the report of the National Task Force on Suicide as having a role to play in suicide prevention.
