Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Patient Statistics.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

529 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Health and Children the breakdown by age and hospital of the number of children diagnosed with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in 2001. [20085/02]

As neither Crohn's disease nor ulcerative colitis are notifiable diseases, comprehensive information on the number of people diagnosed with these conditions is not available. For those with the conditions who require hospitalisation, data are available from hospital in-patient inquiry, HIPE, system which records information on hospitalisations in all publicly funded acute hospitals.

The table below sets out the number of hospitalisations due to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by age group under 15 years for 2001. The majority of these cases were treated in Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, while the remainder were distributed throughout the hospital system. For reasons of confidentiality, it is not possible to identify individual cases by age group and hospital. The figures provided include day cases and in-patients. It should be noted that if patients are admitted more than once in a given year, each attendance is recorded separately in HIPE.
