Vol. 556 No. 4

Other Questions. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

John Perry

Ceist:

54 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Defence his Department's policy in relation to the recruitment and retention of civilian employees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20459/02]

There are about 1,075 civilians employed with military units at present. Civilian employees are typically engaged to free military personnel from non-military tasks or engaged in areas where there is a specialist or technical need which is best addressed through the employment of civilians. The number and grade of civilian employees at each location is kept under ongoing review in the light of military requirements and value for money considerations.

There are about 1,075 civilians employed with military units at locations throughout the country. Has there been a reduction in the figure in recent years, has it been static or has it increased? Are the employees employed on an ad hoc basis or has the Defence Forces or the Department a definite policy on the mix between enlisted and civilian people in the Defence Forces?

The filling of all vacancies is reviewed on an ongoing basis. The Deputy is correct in saying that 1,075 civilians are employed. The vacancies are filled by appointment from candidates nominated for interview by FÁS-Training and Employment Authority, open competition, advertisements in the public press etc.

The number in the Defence Forces per se is 10,500. The civilian number on top of that is the number I have outlined. I do not believe a particular ratio is adopted.
