The Commission for Energy Regulation is responsible for the granting of authorisations to construct electricity generating stations and licences to generate and supply electricity. At present, the only coal-fired electricity generating station is the ESB's facility at Moneypoint, County Clare. The October 2000 National Climate Change Strategy published under the auspices of my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government states that: "It is the Government's intention to ensure that measures addressing the energy supply sector, including emissions trading, greenhouse gas taxation and market liberalisation will be supportive of the ceasing of coal firing at Moneypoint by 2008 and a switch to greater use of gas and renewables."
