Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

277 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 92 of 19 June 2002, the position regarding the provision of additional accommodation at Fews national school, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21189/02]

Architectural planning for a building project at Fews national school is at an early stage. Decisions on projects proceeding to tender and construction are taken in the light of the annual allocation for primary school buildings, the financial commitments to be met and the priority to be afforded to individual projects.

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme for 2002 under way at present, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.. The programme for 2002 is in place and the schools concerned have been notified.

Later this year when a financial allocation has been made for the primary school building programme in the 2003 budget, I will be framing a further programme of works that will proceed to construction and the school concerned will be one of those considered for inclusion in that programme. My Department will be in contact with the schools concerned when the programme for 2003 is published.

Jerry Cowley

Ceist:

278 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the unsatisfactory situation pertaining to the newly amalgamated school in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the available accommodation is in danger under the health and safety regulations; and if he will make a statement on when proper accommodation will be provided. [21190/02]

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme under way at present and this includes a large number of projects at various stages of architectural planning, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

Decisions on additional projects proceeding to architectural planning are taken in the light of the annual allocation for capital projects, the financial commitments to be met and the priority to be afforded to individual projects. The programme for 2002 is in place and the schools concerned have been notified.
Later this year when a financial allocation has been made for the primary school building programme in the 2003 budget I will be framing a further programme of works and this will involve putting more projects into architectural planning. The needs of the school in question will be considered at that time.
In the meantime, the school's board of management should ensure that essential health and safety issues at the school are attended to. They should, therefore, continue to use the devolved grant for minor works and if the cost of any works of an emergency nature exceeds the amount available under the devolved grant, they may apply to my Department's building unit for supplementary grant aid.
