Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Child Support.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

75 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance his plans to make child benefit taxable; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21279/02]

The Government has more than doubled rates of child benefit.

The taxation of child benefit has been examined by a number of different groups over the years, including the Commission on Taxation – 1982, NESC, A Strategy for the Nineties: Economic Stability and Structural Change – 1990, and most recently the Expert Working Group on the Integration of the Tax and Social Welfare Systems – 1996. The Government has no plans at present to tax child benefit.
