Ceist:

405 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí who are detailed to special detective duty in the various Garda divisions; and if there has been a decrease in those numbers since 1998. [21370/02]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the day to day allocation of resources to individual areas, that the personnel strength of the special detective unit as of the 8 November 2002 is 323 for all ranks. This represents a decrease of 13 in the personnel strength of that unit since 31 December 1998.

All gardaí have a responsibility, inter alia, to deal with traffic matters as they arise. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that personnel strength of the traffic department, Dublin Castle, inclusive of the carriage office, is 12 members. The road transport office and the cash escort unit have a strength of three members and nine members, respectively. This excludes the chief superintendent and superintendent. In addition, 121 newly attested gardaí are due to be detailed for traffic duty on the 29 November 2002 for the forthcoming Christmas period.
