Vol. 557 No. 2

Written Answers. - Below Cost Selling.

Damien English

Ceist:

150 Mr. English asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the below cost selling of potatoes, and the negative impact this is having on potato growers; her plans to rectify this; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21705/02]

I am aware of reports of below cost selling of potatoes. Such a practice, if it exists, is not illegal as potatoes are not covered by the terms of the Groceries Order, 1987. It is not clear why such a practice would have a negative impact on the growers as the cost of the lower prices is borne by the retailers. Any reduction in the prices consumers must pay for basic foodstuffs is to be welcomed.
