The attached table shows the numbers of ewes for which ewe premium applications were lodged in each of the years 1994 to 2002. Data for the years 1990-93 is not readily available. The numbers of ewes actually paid premium normally represent 95% to 97% of those for which application is made, the difference being mainly accounted for by potentially eligible ewes dying before the end of retention period, ewes for which application is made not being presented for inspection, no ewe premium quota held by the applicant and penalties imposed for failure to maintain the number of ewes for which application is made.
