Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Radio Broadcasting.

Fergus O'Dowd

Ceist:

476 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs his plans to establish an Irish language pop station as reported in Foinse; the time scale for the project; the cost of setting up and manning the station; if it is included in his Department's Estimates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22322/02]

As the Deputy is aware from the report in Foinse of 10 November 2002 to which he refers, the establishment of an Irish language pop music station in the Gaeltacht was one of the proposals recommended in a report of Coiste Comhairle na nÓg, an advisory group which was established by me as the Minister for State at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands in October 1998. I indicated recently that the proposal, to which I am favourably disposed, is one which will be examined by an Coiste Comhairleach, an advisory committee established by me in early October 2002 to advise on the actions necessary to give practical implementation to the proposals contained in the report of Coimisiún na Gaeltachta and their associated financial implications.

Recommendations from an Coiste Comhairleach will form the basis of action plans which will have deliverable targets and be aimed at strengthening the Irish language in co-operation with the Gaeltacht communities themselves. As recommendations are received by me, they will be examined in the context of available resources and competing priorities.
