Value for Money Report No. 36 – November 2000 – by the Comptroller and Auditor General, in relation to the special housing aid for the elderly scheme, concluded that the scheme represented good value for money.
The scheme was established in 1982 as a pilot scheme to provide assistance to improve the housing conditions of elderly persons living alone in unfit or insanitary conditions. In recognition of the valuable work which is being carried out the scheme has been continued in each year since 1982 and is in this respect a permanent instrument of housing policy in relation to meeting the needs of elderly persons living in poor housing conditions. Funding for the scheme has also been increased significantly in recent years, from a little over £4 million, €5.13 million, in 1997 to a provision of €11.537 million for 2003.
