Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - EURATOM Treaty.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

207 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the time frame for reviewing the EURATOM Treaty; the occasions on which the Government has raised the issue of the British nuclear fuels operations with the European Commission; and the outcome of these contacts. [24114/02]

At present there are no formal proposals from the European Commission to review the EURATOM Treaty.

The Commission is aware of Ireland's concerns about the nuclear industry in general, Sellafield in particular, through our active participation in discussions on these matters at EU and at other fora.

In addition to the separate legal actions taken against the UK Government in regard to the Sellafield MOX plant under the OSPAR Convention and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Irish Government has also reserved the right to take legal action under EU law if and when this is considered appropriate.
