Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Government Elections.

Dan Boyle

Ceist:

17 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the additional town councils likely to be established and voted for at the upcoming local elections of 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23912/02]

Part 17 of the Local Government Act, 2001 sets out, inter alia, the procedures for the establishment of a town council in a town of population of 7,500 upwards. That part will be commenced in the coming months as part of a structured implementation programme, now well under way, to bring the various provisions of the Act into operation. As a proposal to establish a town council must be initiated at local level it is not possible to indicate what proposals may emerge for consideration under part 17.
