Vol. 559 No. 2

Written Answers. - Food Safety Standards.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

90 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to any misleading country of origin labelling in the food industry here; if he has satisfied himself that the law in this area is being adequately adhered to; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25759/02]

As a result of ongoing concerns expressed by consumers to me and through the consumers liaison panel about the import of certain imported meat products during the summer, I established a group to examine all issues, including country of origin, pertaining to food labelling from a consumer perspective. This food labelling group met for the first time at the end of August and it has now completed this task. I was presented with the report by the chairman of the group yesterday and I consider it a very valuable and timely document. I will now examine the findings in this report in conjunction with my colleagues, as appropriate, and I will be making a response in the new year.
