Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Terrorist Attacks in Kenya.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

75 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the EU General and External Affairs Council considered the recent terrorist attacks in Kenya; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26492/02]

The EU's General Affairs and External Relations Council has not specifically discussed the terrorist attacks in Kenya on 28 November which resulted in the death and injury of Kenyan and Israeli citizens. At its most recent meeting, on 9-10 December, the Council took note of a report by the Danish Presidency on the EU's activities in the fight against terrorism. The report contained recommendations for further action in order to enhance the security and protection of EU citizens, to step up the fight against the financing of terrorism and to improve the EU's external action in the fight against terrorism.

On 29 November, I issued a statement condemning the attacks in Kenya and reiterating the resolve of the international community to combat terrorism in all forms and wherever it manifests itself. The Danish EU Presidency and other EU member states have issued statements along similar lines.

In response to the attacks, the UN Security Council on 13 December adopted resolution 1450 (2002) condemning the attacks, deploring the claims of responsibility by al-Qaeda for the attacks, reaffirming the obligations of all states contained in resolution 1390 (2002) to undertake specific measures to combat terrorism, and urging all states, in accordance with their obligations under resolution 1373 (2001), to co-operate in efforts to find and bring to justice the perpetrators, organisers and sponsors of these terrorist attacks.
