Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Salmon Conservation.

John Deasy

Ceist:

566 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if the calculation of the new bag limit for salmon anglers included one day and 21 day licences rather than seasonal licences; his views on whether this is an accurate figure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2014/03]

Ceist:

567 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the concern being expressed by salmon anglers regarding the calculation of the new bag limit for recreational anglers which was based on returns for the year 2001 when approximately 24,500 licensed anglers did not make any return; if this matter will be reviewed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2015/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 566 and 567 together.

The daily bag limits and total allowable catch provisions of the Conservation of Salmon and Sea Trout Bye-law No. 786, 2002 apply in respect of all categories of salmon licence holders. The National Salmon Commission recommended the limits based on the best and latest information available to it. I have not been made aware of any significant concerns being expressed by salmon anglers in this particular regard.

I expect the National Salmon Commission will keep the position under review and recommend any further adjustments in the interest of salmon conservation.
