Vol. 560 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sports Facilities Audit.

Joan Burton

Ceist:

26 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism when the proposed inter-agency steering group to oversee the national audit of sports facilities will be established; its remit and objectives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2053/03]

The programme for Government includes a commitment to complete a national audit of local sports facilities and put in place a long-term strategic plan to ensure the development of such necessary facilities throughout the country. The process which will lead to meeting that commitment will include the carrying out of a review of the current sports capital programme under the Department's expenditure review programme and the preparation of a long-term strategy for the development of sporting facilities. It is envisaged that the national audit of local sports facilities will be undertaken in tandem with the development of the long-term strategy.

The composition of the inter-agency steering group to oversee the national audit of local sports facilities in the context of a new long-term strategy for the provision of sports facilities has recently been agreed.

This group will be chaired by this Department and will include representatives from the Department of Education and Science, the Department of the Environment and Local Government, the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, the Irish Sports Council and some local authorities.
In addition to overseeing the audit, this group will examine current methods of facility provision both in Ireland and elsewhere to develop a strategy document that will outline a planned approach to the provision of sports facilities at all levels.
